  • The National Road Pike Days Festival: Here’s a unique one: The National Road Pike Days Festival is officially known as the world’s longest festival, with festivities spanning over 90 miles as locals and visitors celebrate the heritage of the Historic National Road (also known at Rt. 40) throughout areas of Washington, Somerset and Fayette counties. Every celebration is a little different, so we highly recommend taking the weekend to explore the various food and craft vendors, activities, live entertainment, music and more throughout Scenery Hill, Brownsville and Claysville.

Quintessential Spring Must-Dos

Back to Top of List
  • Joe Hamm's Daffodil Hortus: We’re willing to bet you didn’t know that the largest heritage daffodil collection in the world is right here in Washington County and completely free to see. 88-year-old Joe Hamm has been collecting heritage daffodil varieties since the late 1990s and has since amassed a collection of over 2,000 types of daffodil, with some variations of the flower even dating back to the 1500s and older. As spring starts to settle into Washington County, the collection blooms into a truly magical array of different shapes, sizes and colors of daffodil, making this American Daffodil Society public garden the perfect spring day trip.

Joe Hamm’s Daffodil Hortus is located at 99 Maple Rd., Hopewell Township in Washington, PA 15301. The garden is completely free to visit, and Hamm encourages visitors to take pictures, explore the garden and chat with him about the history of spring’s most popular flower. While it’s hard to say when exactly the garden is at its peak, most daffodils are in bloom from March until the first week of May.

  • Visit The SpringHouse: This place literally has “spring” in the name, people. Beyond the SpringHouse being famous for its mouthwatering, homestyle food, this working dairy farm and storefront is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026. One of the best ways to experience all there is to see on the farm is Family Farm Tour Day on May 23. Visitors to the farm will be able to hand milk a cow, bottle feed a calf, tour the rest of the farm and more!

If you can’t make it for the event, don’t worry. We suggest a trip to the SpringHouse any time you want a home cooked meal, a tour of the farm, a bakery goodie and more.

  • Running of the Wools: A unique celebration of Washington County’s agricultural industry, Running of the Wools is one of those events you just have to be there for. The big event of the day are sheep races down Main Street in downtown Washington, but there’s also plenty of food & craft vendors to explore throughout the day as well. We suggest getting there early to secure the best spot for the races!

Running of the Wools is May 9 in downtown Washington and is free to attend.

  • The Crafty Alpaca / Hickory Hearth Highlands: These two just go hand-in-hand when it comes to the perfect spring day out. First, we recommend heading to the Crafty Alpaca in Avella to tour the farm before meeting, feeding and learning all there is to know about alpacas! Afterwards, check out the farm store and load up on alpaca wool socks, sweaters, hats and more.

Then, take the scenic route back through Hickory, where you’ll find Hickory Hearth Highlands. This farm’s been blowing up on social media recently, and for good reason: the adorable Scottish Highland cows. We can’t think of a better way to spend a spring day than petting, brushing, feeding and playing with the farm’s delightfully fluffy cows and donkeys on this 125-acre, family owned farm.

  • Star Party at Mingo Creek County Park Observatory: Speaking of things we’re willing to bet you didn’t know are right in our backyard is the observatory at Mingo Creek County Park, one of the homes to the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, aka 3AP. Once a month on a Friday and Saturday, 3AP hosts Star Parties, which are completely free to attend. Visitors can view the night sky through the observatory’s two huge telescopes, ask questions about our galaxy and learn more about upcoming celestial events. As the weather warms up, we highly recommend checking this free experience out with the kids.

Bike Ride at a Trail or Park: We get it - it's been a long winter and you're beyond tired of being cooped up inside the house with the kids. Not only are our trails and parks a great way to get outside, they're also free and open to the public pretty much all day everyday. The Montour Trail and Panhandle Trail are great for biking and walking, while the 2-mile National Pike Trail in Claysville has a great nature vibe and is a quick out-and-back. On the parks end, Mingo Creek County Park has plenty of trails and playgrounds for when the kids need a break, or Cross Creek County Park has an awesome bike skills park not many people know about.
