Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 21, and let’s be real: Sometimes Dad can be a bit of a tough nut to crack when it comes to what he wants to do to celebrate his Dad status. Luckily, we’ve got more than plenty to do with Dad on his special day right here in Washington County, no matter what he loves.

For History Buff Dad
Back to Top of List- Pennsylvania Trolley Museum - Take a ride into nostalgia with Dad on a trip to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. The museum features over 50 vintage trolleys (including the famous and newly-restored black-and-gold “Terrible Trolley”) to learn about and explore before you take a 4-mile scenic ride on one. The museum is even having a “Trolleys in Space” event on June 20 featuring crafts, games, science experiments and more that would make for a great dad’s day out with the kids.
- Bradford House Museum - While the Bradford House Museum is closed on Sundays, the Bradford House Museum is still worth checking out on Saturday or Monday if Dad is a big history fan. This 18th century stone home was once the home of David Bradford, a notable leader in the 1791-94 Whiskey Rebellion, also known as the first true rebellion in America’s history. Don’t miss out on the Whiskey Rebellion Education & Visitor Center directly across the street as well!
- Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village - Meadowcroft is just one of those places you have to check out when in Washington County. Located in Avella, the Rockshelter is the oldest known site of human inhabitation in North America, with evidence suggesting people inhabited the area going back a whopping 19,000 years. In addition to the Rockshelter, the museum also features a 16th-century Eastern Woodland Indian village, an 18th-century log cabin and trading post, a 19th-century historic village and one of Washington County’s 23 historic covered bridges.

For Fishing Dad
Back to Top of List- Cross Creek County Park – At 250 acres, Cross Creek County Park is Washington County’s biggest park. Located in Avella, the lake and its surrounding land are a haven for walkers, nature enthusiasts, photographers, kayakers, boaters, and especially fishing enthusiasts like Dad. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie, white crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, yellow perch and saugeye, so there’s plenty to catch on Dad’s special day.
- Canonsburg Lake – Much like Cross Creek, Canonsburg Lake is a highly popular spot to fish in the county. The lake is stocked 5 times a year with bluegill, brown trout, channel catfish, largemouth bass, muskie, rainbow trout, tiger muskie, white crappie and pumpkinseed, and the lake’s size means there’s plenty of different spots to try out.
- Peters Lake Park – Located on the border of Peters Township and South Strabane, this reservoir-turned-park is a local favorite for walkers, kayakers and fishermen. This one is stocked with yellow perch, channel catfish, shad, carp, largemouth bass, crappies and bluegill and has a ton of different spots to try out that are accessible via a trail that goes all the way around the lake.

For Golf Dad
Back to Top of List- Rolling Green Golf Course – Fun fact: Rolling Green golf course in Eighty Four is the oldest public golf course in the county. Surrounded by beautiful rolling green hills and scenery, we think Dad will enjoy a day out on this gorgeous 18-hole course.
- Lindenwood Golf Club – A 27-hole championship golf course, Lindenwood Golf Club is popular for its fast and challenging greens and huge variety of holes to choose from. It’s also the sister course to Rolling Green, so it’s safe to say Lindenwood is just as beautiful as it is open to the public.
- Fort Cherry Golf Club – On the other side of the county in McDonald lies Fort Cherry Golf Club, an 18-hole public course also popular for its challenging greens and stunning scenery.

For Fun Dad
Back to Top of List- Montour Trail – How about a bike ride on the Montour Trail? Spanning 63 miles, with a large portion of the trail running through Washington County, you and Dad can spend the whole day exploring parts of the county over bridges, rivers and through tunnels. However you decide to tackle the trail together, we highly suggest the path that takes you to Tandem Connection in Hendersonville just off Georgetown Rd., as this bike rental shop is a great place to make an ice-cream pitstop.
- Washington County Machine Guns – Here’s a fun one. If you didn’t know you could rent anything from a machine gun all the way to an RPG or a stick of dynamite (Okay, you can’t really rent one of those, but you can pay to light and throw it), you have to check out Washington County Machine Guns with Dad. It’s worth noting that this spot is only open on Saturdays and by reservation only, but believe us when we say this experience is worth celebrating a day early.
- Starport Arcade & Bowling at Hollywood Casino at the Meadows – Watch as Dad crushes you and your record pinball score in just a few minutes at Starport Arcade & Bowling on the bottom floor of Hollywood Casino at the Meadows. This new addition to the property features tons of both modern and retro pinball machines, arcade games, classics and more, plus a newly-revamped bowling and food experience, so this is also a great spot to bring the kids along to. It’s worth nothing that Starport Arcade & Bowling is all-ages until 9pm, after which it’s 21+ only.

For Chill Dad
Back to Top of List- Pig & Fire House of BBQ – What better way to celebrate Dad than with a plate piled high with some of the best BBQ in the county? Pig & Fire House of BBQ in Washington is gaining some serious traction for its famous cherry-smoked meats, creative cocktails and beautiful setting just off Route 19. We highly recommend the beef brisket sandwich, by the way.
- Liberty Pole Spirits & Distillery Tour – Chill Dad doesn’t want much, but we’re willing to bet that he wouldn’t say no to a drink and tour at Liberty Pole Spirits in Washington. The tour is only available on Fridays and Saturdays, but just like Washington County Machine Guns, we think it’s worth going a day early for. At just $10, the tour of Liberty Pole Spirits’ new distillery campus features an in-depth explanation of the history of rye whiskey in WashCo, whiskey production techniques, a walk-through of the 5-story barrelhouse and a post-tour sampling of the distillery’s award-winning whiskey. Afterwards, you and Dad can relax in the Meetinghouse and grab a bite of the Liberty Pole’s certifiably delicious food.
- Santello’s Scratch Kitchen – Maybe you’ve heard about Santello’s in recent months. Originally Frankie I’s Bar & Grille, Santello’s has evolved into something completely different – with great food, craft cocktails and high-energy nightlife now all in the mix of what’s becoming a very popular neighborhood spot. We think Dad will love a smashburger and cold beer out on Santello’s back porch before heading inside to catch the live music act of the night.

If All Else Fails
Back to Top of ListIf Dad's not into any of that, no worries, but we think any Dad would enjoy a trip down to EQT Park for a Washington Wild Things game. While the team is sadly not in town on Father's Day this year, there's home stands on June 16-18 and 23-25. You and Dad could grab a drink at Heist Spirits in Burgettstown or have an outdoor adventure at the Marianna Outdoorsmen Association in Marianna. If Dad really wants to go crazy, go mountain biking at the brand-new Tower Hill Trail Center in Claysville. If Dad is the studious type, consider taking him to a Star Party at Mingo Creek County Observatory on June 19 or 20.
No matter what Dad's into, there are so many ways to celebrate him on his special day. For even more things to do, check out our Events Calendar or Things to Do page. Happy Father's Day!
