Casciola’s Twin Twist is a beloved staple in its Cecil community. This ice cream spot formerly housed a classic diner but is now transitioning its dining space to a brand-new coffee shop and bakery alongside its normal ice cream operations. In the summer, customer go-to’s include ice cream parfaits, custom sundaes, soft serve cones, ice cream nachos and Casciola’s signature gigantic banana splits.

Located directly in the heart of downtown Canonsburg is what many may call an institution of ice cream: Iceberg’s. This family-owned, retro-inspired walk up window is beloved by residents of Canonsburg and beyond for its unique variety of hard scoop ice cream, soft serve, and even Dole Whip flavors like orange, peach and classic pineapple. The parlor even rolls out several seasonal specials for holidays like 4th of July, Oktoberfest and even Christmas during Canonsburg’s Old Fashioned Christmas in early December. It’s worth nothing that this spot is cash only, but there is an ATM on site.

Krency’s has been a staple of Washington for decades, and for good reason. This cozy hometown diner built its iconic ice cream counter directly into the diner, so it’s one of the few spots that’s open year-round. The menu sticks to a simple selection of vanilla, chocolate, twist, and rotating soft-serve flavors, though Krency’s is most frequently recognized for old-school root beer floats and traditional hot fudge sundaes.

Just like Iceberg’s, Lovie’s Frosty Twist in Houston has perfected the retro-inspired ice cream experience. While it nails classic soft-serve, this spot is famous for offering an abundance of creative flavors you don't always see at basic soft-serve stands—including cinnamon, watermelon, lemon, caramel, and cake batter. Lovie’s is also pretty creative when it comes to themed specials, creative parfaits, sky-high sundaes, and, if you’re looking to get in on the viral Dot Cake trend, this spot has you covered there, too.
Lovie’s Frosty Twist is cash-only and seasonal, so click here to learn more.

Any resident of the McDonald area will tell you that M.A.’s Ice Cream Shop absolutely does not come to play when it comes to amazing ice cream. Dole Whip lovers should perk up their ears, because M.A.’s boasts the most unique Dole Whip flavors we’ve seen at a spot thus far, such as pomegranate, strawberry and raspberry in addition to the signature pineapple. Beyond Dole Whip, this spot draws people from far and wide for mile-high sundaes, waffle cones, ice cream sandwiches, gigantic parfaits and so much more. Note that M.A.’s is cash only.

Mingo Twist & Shake in Eighty Four is the whole package. Located just up the hill from Mingo Creek County Park, this full-scale eatery and ice cream stop offers parkgoers, locals and visitors alike a delicious way to end their day. On the food side, menu bestsellers include specialty pizzas, fresh-cut fries, fried cauliflower, strombolis, pepperoni logs, sandwiches, burgers and more. Afterwards, hit up the ice cream side for a cone, float, sundae, ice cream sandwich, and more. This place even has Slush Puppies in more flavors than we ever knew Slush Puppies came in, like strawberry banana, pina colada, kiwi-strawberry and grape in addition to classic flavors.

Speaking of retro experiences, Scotty’s Ice Cream Drive In in Washington is one of those places that just really brings you back to the good old days. In addition to being known for its specialty milkshakes, stacked sundaes and classic banana splits, this classic ice cream joint doubles as the snack bar of your summer dreams. Menu highlights are items like wings, ½ pound burgers, funnel cake fries, onion rings, deep fried pierogies, fried pickles and so much more. Be sure to keep on top of Scotty’s rotating flavor of the week specials, which have thus far included flavors like Rocky Mountain Raspberry, Chocolate Panda Paws, Cinnamon Bun, Blueberry Cheesecake and more.

Don’t let the Christmas theme of this little shop in Monongahela fool you – Sweets by Mrs. C is an essential stop on our little summer ice cream tour of Washington County. This locally-owned spot boasts more than 24 flavors of soft serve, plus milkshakes, parfaits and more. We suggest enjoying it while exploring the shop’s expansive candy offerings, which include all sorts of retro and modern sweets, plus hand-dipped chocolates, toys and more. Sweets by Mrs. C is cozy, whimsical, and the perfect spot for that “Christmas in July” feeling.

It’s kind of hard not to notice Turtle Twist just off Rt. 980 on your way into Canonsburg. Our logic is this: if the building is shaped like a giant ice cream cone, you just know it’s going to be good. This family-owned ice cream shop draws crowds each night for a dizzying variety of sweet treats that includes both hard and soft serve ice cream in pretty much any flavor you can imagine, milkshakes, sundaes, floats, parfaits and even boba. Turtle Twist brings people back night after night with a series of limited-time offerings that have so far included items like a tropical dreamsicle parfait, a pina colada float, coconut cream pie parfaits, orange dreamsicle soft serve, and so much more, so we highly recommend checking out this spot’s Facebook to keep up-to-date with new and creative specials.

Located right on the PA/WV border in Burgettstown, Twister Restaurant and Ice Cream is a classic diner and ice cream stand rolled into one very delicious combination. And “classic” is the name of the game here – while you won’t find any crazy parfaits or dot cakes here, you will find unbeatably good ice cream at a local institution that’s been holding up its community for a very long time. When it comes to that “good-old-days” ice cream experience, it’s hard to beat Twister. While its ice cream, sundaes and tornadoes are crowd-pleasers, we’ve been told this spot’s milkshakes are where it really shines, with pineapple, peanut butter, hot fudge and banana being regular favorites.
