How Duncan & Miller Glass Helped Shape Washington County
For more than half a century, Duncan & Miller Glass produced some of the most elegant glassware in America. Today, that legacy lives on through the Duncan & Miller Glass Museum, a Washington institution dedicated to preserving the history, artistry, and stories behind one of the region's most influential industries.
In Episode 10 of WashCo Insider, host Ryanne Dougherty welcomes Sherri Sulkowski, the museum's Special Events Coordinator, for a conversation that goes far beyond glassware. What emerges is a story about community, family, craftsmanship, and the people who helped build Washington County.
Duncan Glass relocated from Pittsburgh to Washington in 1893, drawn by the area's abundant natural gas resources. The company eventually became Duncan & Miller Glass and remained a major employer until 1955. During its peak years, glass manufacturing played such a significant role in Washington that it is believed nearly 70 percent of the city's workforce was connected to the glass industry.
For Sulkowski, the museum's history became personal when she discovered her own great-grandfather had worked at the Duncan & Miller factory. The discovery came unexpectedly while reviewing historical records at the museum, adding a new chapter to her family's Washington County story. It's exactly the kind of connection that the museum helps visitors uncover every day.
The museum's collection showcases thousands of pieces, including the iconic Duncan & Miller swan. More than just a decorative piece, each swan represents the craftsmanship of approximately fourteen skilled workers who contributed to its creation. That spirit of teamwork and excellence continues to inspire the museum's mission today.
Beyond preserving artifacts, the museum has become a hub for community engagement. Sulkowski discusses a packed calendar of events, including the elegant Swan Ball, themed bridal teas, bourbon tastings, family reunion celebrations, and partnerships with unique regional events like Cookie Table University. These programs help bring history to life while introducing new audiences to the museum's collection.
One of the museum's most anticipated annual events is the National Duncan Glass Society Antique & Collectibles Show and Sale at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Vendors from across the country gather to share and sell glassware, antiques, and collectibles, creating a treasure hunt atmosphere for collectors and history lovers alike.
As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the Duncan & Miller Glass Museum is embracing the opportunity to honor both national and local history. Through special events, family stories, and carefully preserved collections, the museum continues to demonstrate that history isn't just something we read about—it's something we can experience, share, and pass on to future generations.
Whether you're a lifelong collector, a history enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a unique experience in Washington County, this episode offers a fascinating look into the people and stories behind America's loveliest glassware.
