America loves niche shows and festivals. There’s Picklesburgh in Pittsburgh, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, a Garlic Festival in California, a UFO Festival in New Mexico, the Art Car Parade in Houston and even the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta in Maine, an event in which massive pumpkins are turned into boats for a race. We love showing off the fun and even sometimes unusual, and here in Washington County, we’d argue the National Pike Steam, Gas & Horse Association Show is no different.

Held in Brownsville twice a year, the National Pike, Steam Gas & Horse Association Show (NPSGHAS) is a unique display of America’s industrial evolution that’s fun for the whole family. The show was founded in 1980 by 5 men – Bob Livingston, Dean Red, Linsey Gillis, Thomas Weaver and Ed Neal – who donated land and their own antique machinery to begin the show.
Now, almost 50 years later, the NPSGHAS has grown to 100 acres and 600 members and volunteers dedicated to making the display bigger and better every year. True to its name, the show includes antique machinery and engines of all kinds, plus vintage tractors, construction equipment, steam and portable engines, shingle mills, rock crushers, sawmills and more.

It’s not just a static display, either – there are plenty of demonstrations throughout the day showing off the might of these old engines, so we’re willing to bet that even those that think they don’t have any interest in engines and machinery might find some fun at this unique show.
In addition to the demonstrations of the engines, there are mini-showings of smaller pieces of machinery like flour corn mills and shingle mills. One of the most popular demonstrations of the whole event is the live working blacksmith.

In between demonstrations, attendees shouldn’t miss checking out the various craft vendors, the flea market or the food area at the show. There’s also live music and entertainment throughout the day at both the spring and summer edition of the show, but the summer show typically has a little extra on the schedule with the addition of parades and a few displays and demonstrations the spring show doesn’t have.
The National Pike Steam, Gas & Horse Association Show is May 16-17 and August 7-9, 2026 at 222 Spring Rd., Brownsville, PA 15417. The spring show is free to attend, but there is admission for the summer show: $7 per person. Children under 12 are free and Friday is senior day – tickets are just $5.
