Beyond the Symphony: Celebrating 25 Years of the Washington Symphony Orchestra
From classical masterpieces and movie soundtracks to rock anthems and video game favorites, the Washington Symphony Orchestra is proving that live orchestral music has something for everyone.
For 25 years, the Washington Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has been bringing the magic of live music to audiences throughout Washington County, Pennsylvania. What began as a small group of musicians with a shared passion has grown into one of the region's most exciting performing arts organizations, drawing sold-out crowds and introducing new generations to the power of orchestral music.
On Episode 25 of the WashCo Insider, host Ryanne Dougherty of the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency sits down with Washington Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Cassandra Muhr and longtime Conductor Yugo Ikach to explore the organization's history, its unique approach to live performances and what audiences can expect during its milestone anniversary season.
25 Years of Music in Washington County, PA
The Washington Symphony Orchestra traces its beginnings to 2002, when founder Dave Owens envisioned bringing more live orchestral music to Washington County.
What started with just a handful of musicians has grown into an orchestra of approximately 65 performers, combining talented volunteer musicians with experienced professionals, including performers who have worked with organizations such as the Pittsburgh Opera and Wheeling Symphony.
Over the years, the WSO has performed at several Washington County venues, including the historic George Washington Hotel, Washington Park Elementary School and Trinity High School. As its audience continued to grow, the orchestra eventually found a home at the Olin Fine Arts Center at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA.
Today, the orchestra is celebrating an incredible achievement: two consecutive sold-out concert seasons.
For Muhr and Ikach, that success represents more than ticket sales. It demonstrates the community's growing appreciation for live music and the meaningful connections created between performers and audiences.
Not Your Typical Symphony Orchestra
Think a symphony orchestra is only for classical music enthusiasts? Think again.
One of the Washington Symphony Orchestra's greatest strengths is its ability to make orchestral music approachable, entertaining and accessible to everyone.
Rather than focusing exclusively on traditional classical compositions, the WSO creates themed performances featuring a wide variety of musical styles and familiar favorites.
Audiences might experience Beethoven alongside music from Hollywood blockbusters, popular video games, legendary rock bands or country music icons.
Under Ikach's direction, performances are designed to feel more like engaging variety shows than formal classical concerts. He regularly interacts with audiences, shares stories and creates an atmosphere where having fun is just as important as appreciating the music.
That philosophy reflects the WSO's mission to entertain, educate and inspire.
The organization also works to keep ticket prices affordable and provide convenient access to live orchestral performances without requiring audiences to travel into downtown Pittsburgh.
From Led Zeppelin to the Legend of Zelda
The Washington Symphony Orchestra has never been afraid to explore unexpected musical territory.
During the episode, Muhr and Ikach discuss some of the orchestra's most memorable performances, including a rock-themed concert featuring music by Led Zeppelin and a special performance of "Country Roads" with approximately 50 ukulele players.
The orchestra also brought its talents to the Washington Wild Things ballpark for a Fourth of July celebration, combining live orchestral music with a fireworks display as part of the region's America 250 festivities.
These creative performances demonstrate how the WSO continues to find new ways to connect with audiences throughout Western Pennsylvania.
And the orchestra's 25th anniversary season promises even more surprises.

The Power of Live Music and Community Connection
Beyond the creative programming and sold-out performances, Muhr and Ikach believe the true value of the Washington Symphony Orchestra lies in its ability to bring people together.
Throughout the episode, both share touching stories about the emotional impact of live performances and the unique relationship between musicians and their audiences.
Ikach describes the electricity that fills a concert hall when performers and audience members experience music together. Muhr shares how meaningful it is to see audiences connect with a performance, whether through singing along, discovering something new or simply enjoying a memorable evening.
In an increasingly digital world, those shared experiences remain an important part of what makes live music special.
The WSO is also looking toward the future with plans to expand its educational outreach, reach new audiences and introduce younger children to music through initiatives such as its new Instrument Petting Zoo, which gives children opportunities to explore and play musical instruments.
