If running or walking (for your life) is your forte, read on for some great running and walking events promising wicked good fun this fall.

Sheriff Fun Run Zombie 5K - Mingo Creek County Park

Back to Top of List

Some say a great way to motivate yourself to run is to pretend you’re being chased by a horde of zombies. Except in this race, the zombies aren’t a part of your imagination – instead, they’re very real AND hot on your tail. Whether you walk, run or jog, your mission is the same: survive!

Experience heart-pumping thrill during the Sheriff's Zombie Fun Run 5K as you run through the scenic Mingo Creek County Park and try to avoid zombies who are desperately trying to collect runners’ flags. The race features three options: a 5k timed race with zombies, a flagless escape run and a 1-mile race. You can also opt to participate as a zombie and compete for the highest infection rate to win the “Zombie Cup.”

While you're in the area, we highly recommend checking out the rest of the 2,600-acre Mingo Creek County Park's many trails, pavilions, playgrounds and courts for volleyball, tennis and pickleball. The park even features 2 of Washington County's historic covered bridges, Ebenezer and Henry.

The Sheriff’s Zombie Fun Run 5K is October 20. The race’s proceeds benefit the Washington County Sheriff’s Office DARE and Community Outreach. For more information and to register, click here.

Shades of Death 10 Miler – Avella, PA

Back to Top of List

If you really want to get spooky, look no further than the Shades of Death 10 Miler. If the name of the event isn’t enough for you, this challenging 10-mile run/walk loop might be.

This run/walk will take you on multiple paved and dirt back roads, including Shades of Death Road (yes, that’s the real and slightly terrifying name of the road), with plenty of scenic views of farms and forests throughout the course. With over 1200 feet of total ascent and descent, this run may not be for the faint of heart: Within the first mile you will climb the longest and steepest hill of the entire course with a +14.5 grade, 1.5-mile-long ascent. You’ll also pass by Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village on the way, which makes for a great stop if you’re sticking around for the weekend.

After the race, participants and spectators are invited to stick around for a meal, drinks and live music. All donations and profits from the race benefit local volunteer fire departments, so no matter how challenging the run, it’s all for a good cause.

The Shades of Death 10 Miler is October 26. Learn more about the event and register here.
