This route to ascend Wasson Peak begins at the Sendero Esperanza trailhead within Saguaro National Park. Because the trailhead lies within the National Park, a vehicle fee must be paid. This is the shortest route to ascend the peak, with a round-trip distance of 5 miles and an ascend of 1040 feet. For a longer hike, one can begin at the Hugh Norris trailhead on Picture Rocks Road. This increases the total distance to 12.7 miles round-trip with a 2155 foot elevation gain.
As with all trails within Saguaro National Park West, there is very limited shade on the trail and intense sun exposure. During much of the year, excessive heat is a serious danger. Carry an abundance of water and avoid hiking during the heat of the day during the late spring, summer, and early fall.
